We did this one with children and also at adult day cares. The craft couldn't be easier - sorry about that photo - I'll try and post a better one. At any rate, we just used Crayola clay that air dries, black seed beads, a bit of wire, a butterfly sticker and a wire. It is pretty self explanatory - you roll up a ball, use a knife or scissor edge to cut a mouth, open the mouth, pop a bead into the clay on each side, put a little glitter on the back of your sticker, glue the glittery butterfly to your wire and insert the wire in the clay. It is a wonderful platform for doing activities (i.e. blind walks) which let children experience what it is like to have a physical handicap. Since the book discusses how a blind child experiences color, we did a monochromatic collage. We had card stock, sequins, feathers, pom poms, buttons, pipe cleaners - and anything else we could find - grouped in colors. The children had to pick just ONE color and do a collage that represented what that color felt like to them. We are reading books about children up against impossible circumstances. Our first book was Coraline by Neil Gaiman. For the craft we made tiny Coraline dolls in little match box houses.<br /></div></div><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;">We found the images of Coraline on Google Images and then resized them to fit inside the matchbox (@ 2 in. tall). We then printed them out on Ink Jet fabric sheets, backed them with a purple fabric, sewed around them (leaving room to stuff), stuffed them, closed them up and cut them out with pinking shears. For the matchboxes we bought the plain boxes at Oriental Trading, painted them dark purple, found a picture of Coraline's house on Google Images, resized it and printed it out on card stock. We glued this to the top of the match box, glued silver stars and other images from the movie (printed on card stock) to the back and made a drawer pull on one end with a button.
